The Scoop on Potty Breaks

One of the biggest reasons pet owners hire dog walkers is letting their pups out for a potty break. So how long can a dog go between breaks? In general, they can hold in urine or feces for one hour every every month they are old, up until 8 hours at 8 months. Older and sick dogs may need to go more often. Other factors include sex, breed, and body size. The maximum length of time any dog can be expected to hold it is 8 hours. Holding urine in can have serious consequences, including weakened bladder muscles, bladder, kidney and urinary tract infections, urinary stones, and in the long run, may increase the chances of certain types of cancer due to carcinogens being in prolonged contact with the cells.

In addition to being able to relive themselves, having a dog walker come to your house gives your dog opportunities for socialisation, exercise, and playtime.

The bottom line is, a healthy adult dog is fine to be left alone for 8 hours, as long as he or she is being let out 3 to 5 times a day. If at all possible, however, arrange for a sitter to visit at least once a day, and twice a day certainly wouldn't hurt.
